This March 3, 1983 photo provided by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory shows Dr. Lew Allen Jr., a former Air Force chief of staff who headed NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 1982 to 1990 and oversaw the launches of the Magellan spacecraft to Venus and the Galileo mission to Jupiter, died Monday Jan. 4, 2010 in Potomac Falls, Virginia.
